Applying as a current or a former student

If you are enrolled in or have previously been enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme, special rules may apply if you wish to apply for the same programme or if you wish to apply for another similar programme. Select the scenario below that applies to you and see how to apply.

I am currently enrolled in a programme – I would like to change to another programme at AU.

If you are currently enrolled in a programme and would like to change to another programme at AU, in most cases you must apply for ordinary admission the same way you applied for admission to your current programme. How to apply depends on the following:

Have you passed the first academic year?

If you have passed more than 60 ECTS and expect to obtain a credit transfer for the entire first academic year on your new programme at AU, you should instead apply for a change of programme. This is often relevant when changing between programmes with very similar first years.

Are you unsure whether you have passed the first academic year?

If you are unsure whether you can get a credit transfer for the entire first academic year, we recommend that you apply for both a change of programme and ordinary admission to the new programme. It is not a problem to apply for both things at the same time

I have previously been enrolled in a degree programme – now I would like to apply for the same programme

How you should apply depends on how much of the programme you have already completed.

I have passed all courses in the first academic year

I have not passed all courses in the first academic year

Are you unsure whether you have passed all courses in the first academic year?

Perhaps you are unsure whether what you have passed corresponds to the first academic year. For example, the degree programme might have changed since you were enrolled in it, and the first academic year might now contain different courses.

If you are unsure whether you can get a credit transfer for the entire first academic year, we recommend that you apply for both re-enrolment and for ordinary admission to the programme. It is not a problem to apply for both things at the same time.

Please be aware of the five-month rule

When you apply for a degree programme that you have been enrolled in before, the five-month rule applies. This rule means that you must have been withdrawn from the programme at least five months before the start of the programme you are applying for.

I am already enrolled in a degree programme at another university in Denmark – I would like to transfer to the same programme at AU

How you should apply depends on how much of your programme you have passed.

Have you passed the first academic year?

If you have passed 60 ECTS or more and expect to obtain a credit transfer for the entire first academic year in the programme at AU, you should apply for a university transfer. Please note that your current degree programme and the programme at AU might not have the same structure and content. It is, therefore, a good idea to compare the courses in your current programme with the academic regulations (studieordning) for the programme you wish to transfer to at AU.

Are you unsure whether you have passed the first academic year?

If you are unsure whether you can get a credit transfer for the entire first academic year, we recommend that you apply for both a university transfer and for ordinary admission to the programme. It is not a problem to apply for both at the same time.

If you have not passed the first academic year

If you have passed fewer than 60 ECTS, you must apply for ordinary admission, the same way you did when you applied to your current university.

If you are admitted to the degree programme, AU will automatically assess whether you can get a credit transfer for some of the courses you have already completed in your current programme.

I am enrolled in a degree programme at AU – I would like to transfer to a different campus

If you are already enrolled in a degree programme at AU and would like to continue in the same programme but transfer to a different campus, you should apply for a campus transfer.

I have completed a degree programme – now I would like to apply for a new programme

If you have completed a Master’s programme, you may only be admitted to a new higher education programme if there are empty places in the programme you are applying for. This also applies if you took your Master’s programme outside Denmark.

I am enrolled – or have been enrolled – at a university outside Denmark. I would now like to study at AU

If you are enrolled or have been enrolled at a university outside Denmark, you must always apply for ordinary admission to AU. This is regardless of how much of your degree programme you have already completed.

Credit transfer

If you are admitted to a Bachelor’s degree programme, AU will automatically assess your credit transfer eligibility, unless you have already completed your programme.

If you are admitted to a Master’s degree programme, AU will automatically assess your credit transfer eligibility, unless you have already completed your programme. If you have completed your programme and would like AU to assess your credit transfer eligibility, you must apply for this yourself.
