You are exempt from payment of tuition fees if you
- hold a permanent residence permit in Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands).
- hold a temporary residence permit “with the possibility of permanent residence” in Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands).
- hold a permanent residence permit in another Nordic country (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland), provided you maintain your permanent residency in that country while being enrolled at Aarhus University. If you move to Denmark, you are liable to pay tuition fees.
To remain exempt from payment of tuition fees, you must provide documentation of your continued official residency in the other Nordic country at the end of each semester, e.g. by submitting documentation of your tax liability in the relevant Nordic country.* - have been granted a temporary residence permit cf. the Danish Aliens Act
- section 7 (1) and section 8 (1) of the Danish Aliens Act (convention refugees);
- section 7 (2) and section 8 (2) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with protection status);
- section 7 (3) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with temporary protection status));
- section 9b (1) of the Danish Aliens Act (foreigners with humanitarian protection status);
- section 9 (1) or 9c (1) of the Danish Aliens Act as a consequence of a familial relationship to a foreigner with a residence permit pursuant to section 7(1) or 7 (2) or 7 (3) or section 8 (1) or (2) of the Danish Aliens Act (family reunification);
- section 9m (1) of the Danish Aliens Act and your parent(s) has/have been granted a residence permit pursuant to Section 9a of the Danish Aliens Act. You have the right to complete the degree programme you have started without paying tuition fees, even if your parent's residence permit according to Section 9a of the Danish Aliens Act expires.
- are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.
- have obtained EU status pursuant to the Executive Order on Residence in Denmark for Aliens Falling within the Rules of the European Union (the EU Residence Order).
- have dual nationality (EU/EEA + non EU/EEA) and decide to enter Denmark as an EU/EEA citizen.
- hold a temporary residence permit in Denmark pursuant to Law no. 2055 of 16 November 2021 regarding persons who in Afghanistan have provided support to Danish authorities etc.
- hold a temporary residence permit in Denmark pursuant to Law no. 324 of 16 March 2022 regarding persons who have been displaced from Ukraine.
- receive a tuition waiver/scholarship at AU.**
Legal basis
The rules regarding exemption of payment of tuition fees refer to Ministerial Order no. 1957 of 15 October 2021 on funding and auditing at Danish universities, including amendments and explanatory notes.
